Deptford Foundry, London

Located in the heart of one of London’s most exciting and vibrant neighbourhoods, Deptford Foundry sits on the site of a former metal foundry built in 1831 by Josiah Stone.

The scheme has been designed to help reconnect local people, creating an exciting new piece of the city. The original foundry on Arklow Road was once a thriving centre of design excellence, producing a variety of metal goods from propellors to manhole covers. The design and architecture at Deptford Foundry his been inspired by this rich history.

The MW Approach

With eight buildings and one tower, set amongst an already thriving community, Deptford Foundry consists of 276 private dwellings across a 2.9 acre site which is within easy reach of the rest of the city. The architecture and landscape is inspired by local history– the warehouses, the metal foundry and modern creative industries.

The MW Vision

The landscape design at Deptford Foundary serves two key purposes. One is to provide a link and connection between both new and old communities, whilst the other will create a sense of calm and tranquility to ease the bustle of daily life.

Clive McDonnell, MW Senior Landscape Architect:
A key element of the proposals is to create a strong sense of connectivity for pedestrians between Arklow Road, Rolt Street and adjacent public green spaces such as Evelyn Green and Folkestone Gardens.

The MW Touch

Murdoch Wickham have created a series of interlocking walled gardens and courtyard spaces. These are further enhanced by raised planters, seating and children’s play areas. The site’s rich heragtae has inspired the materials and finishes uses– specimen multi-stems, shrubs and evergreen plants sit around a Corten steel water feature and large steel sculptural pieces.
